The Scandinavian Middle Ages
The Scandinavian Middle Ages
saw Sweden, Denmark and Norway in constant opposition and sometimes warfare until all the nations combined to form the Kalmar Union under Queen Margaret I. This remarkable woman steered Scandinavia in her own right, a novelty for Europe. Saint Birgitta of Sweden was also a formidable medieval woman who was able to wield earthly as well as spiritual power. During this era, Scandinavia became part of Western Europe and set the stage for the nation states that would follow the Middle Ages.

Get Your Feet Wet: Beginning 1
April 18 - May 9 (4 sessions)
Thursdays 6:15-7:15pm PDT

Are you interested in learning Danish? Join our Beginning Danish 1 class at SLI and start your language journey today! Our supportive class atmosphere is perfect for new students to learn the basics of the language, including pronunciation, greetings, simple exchanges, numbers, foods, and cultural points like Danish geography and celebrations. With a relaxed conversational approach, questions and conversational “bunny trails” are welcome (within reason 😉) and the (free, online) textbook provides opportunities for reading, listening, and writing. Note, these are not "total immersion" classes. Instead, students and instructor will lay the foundations of understanding through English, while easing into Danish with dialogues and short exchanges. Sign up today!

Beginning Danish 2
April 17 - May 8 (4 sessions)
Wednesdays 6:15-7:15pm PDT

Finished Danish 1 and ready to move on? This class is a continuation of Danish 1. We will continue with chapter 4 of Colloquial Danish and focus more on constructing sentences that indicate things you did in the past, as well as things you are planning. We'll also work on the alphabet and keep on practicing with the Danish numbers.

Danish 3
April 9 - May 14 (6 sessions)
Tuesdays 5:00 - 6:00pm PST

In this class, we'll continue with Colloquial Danish and focus on phrases from daily life and daily schedules. We'll also talk about personal likes, dislikes, desires and feelings.

H. C. Anderson Advanced Bogklub
April 16 - May 21 (6 sessions)
Tuesdays 6:15 -7:15pm PST

Join the H.C. Andersen Advanced Bogklub at SLI for a unique literary experience. Perfect for advanced Danish speakers, this book club offers the opportunity to read and discuss one or two of Andersen's lesser-known works. The class is primarily conducted in Danish, but English is also used at times. Join us for a stimulating and engaging discussion of a literary giant whose works, insights, and innovations are too often skewed, blurred, and belittled in popular culture.

For folk, som godt kan forstå dansk and kan tale om nogle abstrakte emner. Vi samtaler lidt i begyndelsen af timen om forskellige emner, og så læser vi "Kejserens nye Klæder" og andre eventyre af H.C. Andersen.
