Director, Norwegian Instructor
In 1978, Edward Egerdahl founded the Norwegian Language Learning Center, and has served as board president and director of the Scandinavian Language Institute since its incorporation in 1980.
Ed graduated in 1977 from the Scandinavian Department of the University of Washington earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Norwegian Language and Literature, and Education. Ed has been teaching Norwegian language classes professionally at various locations in the Seattle area since 1978.
Melissa comes from Michigan, but has lived in Seattle for around ten years. She learned Danish as a student in Denmark. In February, she received her PhD in Scandinavian Studies from UW. Melissa loves to teach Danish and has done so at UW and SLI for around eight years.
Randy Nelson has a Master’s Degree in Scandinavian Languages and Literature from the University of Washington. He has taught Swedish through the University of Washington Distance Learning and at Seattle’s Swedish Club. Randy has lived and worked in Lund, Malmö and Härnösand, Sweden and Vejle, Denmark.
He has studied in Tampere, Finland and traveled in Norway and Iceland. He enjoys working on Saab automobiles and currently does research on Scandinavian laborers of the early 20th century in the American West. Randy is on the faculty at South Seattle College.
Kim Kraft first learned Swedish as a high school exchange student in the south of Sweden. She has a MA in Scandinavian Language and Literature from the University of Washington and is a member of the Association of Swedish Teachers and Researchers in America (ASTRA). Kim is currently a Lecturer in 2nd Year Swedish and the Undergraduate Academic Advisor for the Scandinavian Department at the University of Washington.
Kim grew up in the Pacific Northwest and loves almost everything about this beautiful state. She spends much of her free time planning trips and reading guidebooks. She also loves hiking, snowboarding, listening to Moth radio, picnicking, and riding the ferry.
Administrative Assistant and Bookkeeper
Laurie is Ed's wife and partner in the "behind the scenes" at SLI. She is also of Norwegian heritage and enjoys learning the language and culture of Norway. Her duties include bookkeeper, manager of email addresses and student database, website updates, and tour assistant.
Brad Harmon grew up on a farm and graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.A. in German, Scandinavian & Dutch. He is currently a graduate student in the Department of Scandinavian Studies at University of Washington, where he also teaches Swedish. He has studied and worked in Sweden and Germany. When he’s not teaching or reading, he’s rowing, running, or hiking.
